About the event
“My art has always helped me uncover faded artifacts—objects left over from a time that lives only in equally faded memory,” Jakobsberg explains, recalling an apartment full of her father’s New York Garment District fabric and clothing samples. Their particular but unrepeatable array of colors and textures, hinting at both community and family heritage, later inspired her to make prints not only on paper but also on cloth, wood, plastic, or metal—any material to which ink can be applied. “Memories of touching textures and shifting fabrics unencumbered by form
whisper to me,” she says, “of a past obscured by time, but not forgotten.”
For Quinn, whose painting tends to abstraction, memories become art through her openness to exploration. “I’m inspired by the places I’ve visited and the colors and forms, light and dark, I see there,” she says. “I start by playing with paint on the surface until something emerges. Other paintings start from shapes in nature as I try to give order to them.” Quinn’s impulse to bring form out of formlessness often prompts her to add layers of painted paper or collage, with further texturing from scratching, adding, or extracting material.
“Worn/Memories” will be on display from Wednesday, December 11, 2024, through Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Locals Farm Market, 19929 Fisher Avenue, Poolesville, Md. This show is the sixteenth Riverworks “Artist in the House” exhibition to be featured on the second floor of
the historic Veirs-Stevens House at Locals.
